solo across the Atlantic

In December 60 year old Irish born Shirley Thompson set off from the Canaries to row 3,000 nautical miles solo across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean hoping to take the record for the oldest female to row solo across an ocean and the first Irish female to row solo across an ocean.

Her journey had to be stopped when her boat started to take on substantial water after 11 days at sea, she lost all electrics and Shirley had to set off her emergency beacon and she was rescued by helicopter. A week later she rescued her boat “Amigo” who is being prepared for Shirley’s next departure at the end of January.

Be part of her journey as Shirley proves to herself and others that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
